12 Months, 25 Dollars – Part 4, July ’21

Following the example set by Dino over at Chaosbunker, starting last month, I will abide by a simple rule:

Every month I have a budget of $25 for my hobby.

The July purchase was only slightly related to one of my current projects. I’ve picked up the Tomb Kings again and my hobby is focused on this Warhammer 6th Edition Tomb Kings project. Known more widely as MiddleHammer (OldHammer being 1st-4th Editions), I have been slowly but surely collected all of the 6th Edition resources I can. Most, if not all of these books are floating around online as PDFs but let’s be real, there is no substitute for having the original paperbacks in hand. And now, with the addition of the Ogre Kingdoms book, I have completed the collection! This Orge Kingdoms book proved to be annoyingly hard to find – and the copies that were available had frankly, insane prices. Thus, I did not hesitate to place the order at Mindtaker Miniatures when I saw this one surface.

Mindtaker has been my go-to source for old Warhammer models. The prices are fair and the stock is constantly being updated. If you are looking for some second-hand models, give them a look!

Four months down. Still keeping to the $25 limit! Next month I’m looking for a final box of Skeletons to round off my Tomb Kings.

The rabbit hole is forever. I was working on my Saurus Guard models for the Frog Army and I am focusing on the theme of Cosmic Lords of Space and Time as per the Seraphon’s backstory. So, with my Stargate model nearing completion, I just had to find a Jaffa helmet to put on a turtle…It is a 5 model unit of the best of the best of space and time.

  • Jaffa Turtle (Horus helmet
  • Loki Croc variant
  • Frog Thor variant
  • Lizard “Dalek”
  • “Predator” Turtle

So yes, I did by a $10 model just to cut its head off for a conversion. But it is gonna look so cool! Also, maybe Andrew wants this babe to make a Tomb Kings Goddess conversion (Total: $13.19).

I also picked up Games Workshop newest General’s Handbook for Age of Sigmar 3.0. This includes all the scenarios, updated point values for all armies, a mini rulebook, new battle tactic cards, and the “realm rules” for this season (Total: $42.25).

GW is doing a season approach for AOS which will change the realm all your battles take place in once per year. This is a fun micro-meta game in that can influence your unit selection and gives fun little mechanics. For example, on Turn 3, the player who goes second gets to remove an objective due to seismic activity.

The battle tactics are also new. They involve players choosing one per turn and trying to complete it. It is one of the main ways to score victory points on top of the regular mission objectives. You can only chose each tactic once and when and how you chose will all depend on opponents, mission and army.

July was a straightforward month and I already knew (and ordered) my “necessary items” immediately after writing my last post!

For a competitive Bolt Action army list, which I hope to use soon (when there are again some Tournaments happening in my area – and in Germany in general) I needed some extra toys. To be precise some nice Rubicon Models swag.

I ordered three more Rubicon Schwimmwagen kits, which I found with a slight discount for 13.23€ each, ringing in at a total of 39.71€ for all three Schwimmwagen (free shipping, yay!). Why didn’t I just buy two and one additional Schwimmwagen in August?

Good question. On top of there being a slight discount, I wanted to make sure that the paint job on all three will be similar. The fact that I only have them primed, is of course another thing…

This purchase breaks the bank a little, but I have some sales from my private collection planned for this month, which should balance it again out.
