How to paint Warhammer 40,000 city bases

Quick and easy method for painting Warhammer 40,000 city bases. These bases are great for adding a bit of extra height to your models and can provide a strong contrast to paint scheme of the model.

Base Layer Shade
  • Abaddon Black
  • Deathworld Forest
  • Dawnstone
  • Administratum Grey
  • Pallid Wych Flesh
  • Hashut Copper
  • Agrax Earthshade

1. Start by priming the bases black and touching up with a thin basecoat of Abaddon Black.

2. Using a large drybrush apply a harsh drybrush of Dawnstone to the entire base.

3. Again with the large drybrush apply a moderately heavy drybrush of Deathworld Forest to the ‘city’ areas of the base. This is any part that is not rubble.

4. One final light drybrush of Administratum Grey over the entire base. This layer will tie the city parts and rubble together.

5. One of the only two detail steps, pick out the skulls with Pallid Wych Flesh. It may take two coats to cover evenly, take your time and be careful.

6. Last detail step, find any shell casing and paint them Hashut Copper. Painting the skulls and the casing adds just a bit of color pop to the bases and breaks up the otherwise uniform tone.

7. Grab that wash brush and go in with a healthy dose of Agrax Earthshade over the entire base.

8. Once the Agrax Eathshade is dry, carefully apply a thin layer of Abaddon Black to the rim. This final step gives your model a nice, clean frame.

Boom! By choosing colors and complement your miniatures you can achieve a striking base scheme by using fast and dirty techniques. Always remember, a model is not finished, until it’s based.

    1. We made these bases using bits from Sector Imperialis bases, skulls and sand. They have a similar look and feel to the Sector Imperialis base kit, and I’m sure the paint scheme would work in those just fine.
