The two-player Starter Set for Bolt Action: Third Edtion has been announced! Battle of Bulge pits the US Army against German Fallschirmjäger – both in winter uniform as brand-new plastic infantry kits. Battle of the Bulge includes:
… new and exclusive early access to Warlord Games’ newest plastic infantry kits – German Fallschirmjäger and US Army infantry, both in winter clothing! In addition, an A5 softback rulebook is included, along with a plastic M8 armoured car and ruined farmhouse terrain piece – and everything else needed to start playing!
We’ve seen this style of release from Warlord before. Using a “battle set” to launch a new plastic infantry kit. This set is going to fly off the shelves. Players have been crying out for plastic winter US in greatcoats for years. A great pick from Warlord for their new Starter Set. Both additions to the US and German range are looking nice:
The Starter Set also includes an M8/M2 Armored Car for the US (no sightings of a German vehicle) and the venerable Ruined Farmhouse terrain (which was originally included in the First Edition Starter Set – D-Day: Firefight).
From the preview photos the US sprues will include options for:
- Rifles (M1 Carbine and Garand)
- SMGs (Thompson and Grease Gun)
- Bazookas
- BARs
- Sniper Rifles
And the Fallschirmjäger sprues will include:
- Rifles (Kar98k)
- LMGs (MG42)
- Assault Rifles (STG-44 and FG 42)
- SMGs (MP-40, PPSh and Sten)
- Panzerfausts
There might be some conversion and kitbash options with the current Soviet Infantry (Winter) but that kit is starting to show its age. The German Infantry (Winter) will be a perfect complement to the new Winter FJ giving German players the option to build out a wide range of winter-themed units.
Specifics for the Third Edition Rulebook:
- 320-page hardback (Second Edition was 228 pages)
- A “full index”
- Army Lists for US, UK, Soviet Union, Germany and Imperial Japan

I’d say it’s a tad early to pass judgment on the Starter Set without seeing the rules. But the contents are a bit of a surprise for sure.

Honestly haven’t been this excited about a bolt action release in years. V3 is amazing by itself but getting winter US is absolutely amazing. Also the FJs having Stens and PPSH as an option is brilliant. Having captured weapons on sprue is a welcome addition.
Even if this starter ends up being a little lopsided the new models alone would make up for it in my opinion.
