Under the Baking Sun – Part VII

What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun.

– Ecclesiastes 1:9

And. We. Are. Back! Something major happened since Part VI – the release of Warhammer: The Old World! It’s here! It’s real! It finally happened! Square bases are hitting tables across the globe and it’s one hell of an exciting time to be a Tomb King. Despite the supply issues I was able secure copies of the the Rulebook (The BBB), Ravening Hordes and Arcane Journal: Tomb Kings of Khemri. Thus cursed with knowledge, I’ve adjusted my unit compositions (Skeleton Cohorts let’s go) and taken my first steps down the path of The Old World.

Sprues & Glue

Let’s take a moment of silence for the 20mm square base. Long did you reign as the de-facto infantry base in Warhammer Fantasy. The 20mm walked so the 25mm could run. The base size for the vast majority of infantry units in ToW is now 25mm and I am faced with the prospect of re-basing my current collection.

Depending on the status of the model I either:
– broke them off the 20mm and put them onto a new 25mm or
– used a 20mm to 25mm base adaptor.

The results are … mixed. The 25 Skeletons with Hand Weapons and Shields all look great on their new 25mm bases. But the ones that I had already fully based on 20mm look, well, incomplete . As much as it pains me to do, I’ll apply additional basing material to extend the basing out to cover the full 25mm base and then repaint each base. My only worry is the bases that used the adaptors will look strange next to the original 25mm bases. But that cannot be helped.

I’ve also built a unit of three Carrion using the One Page Rules models. I’ve never been a fan of the Games Workshop Carrion, even back in 6th Edition. It’s one of the few units I never used purely based on the models. I’m a big fan of these alternates and even used some original Citadel flying stands for them!

Paint Splatter

1 – 20mm with 25mm adapter. 2 – Basing material add to adapter. 3 – The re-basing!

It’s gonna be nothing but painting bases for a while. Before I can start on a new unit (or even finish the first unit of Chariots) I am compelled to actually finish these two units of Skeleton Cohorts. Unit A is complete besides painting the re-basing. And Unit B only has about 10 skeletons in need of paint. I am already setup for success, just need to knuckle down and get started. To be honest I’ve been struggling to find motivation to paint three coats of Balor Brown on these newly expanded bases but it must be done!

Luckily the basing material (Vallejo Dark Earth) is still awesome and applies easy. I’m hoping the direct application of Balor Brown won’t be an issue. I’ll have to a test and see. Otherwise a coat of brush-on primer should do the trick. I love the look of these skeletons on the new 25mm bases, no complaints there. It was a bummer tearing my fully completed Tomb Scorpion off the 50x50mm and putting it on a new 75mmx50mm base – but again, the new base looks fantastic. No move little scorpion legs hanging off the edges.

So that’s the plan – finish the basing and then finish the Chariots. After that? Chariot crew and a Tomb King.

Progress Report towards battle with Cole

Best laid plans have failed in the face of Warhammer: The Old World hitting store shelves. The enthusiasm has not diminished one bit but now it’s for a new game system! WFB 6th Ed is dead, long live ToW! Cole and I are now prepping for a much more reasonable 1k game of ToW to get our bearings.
