Notes and Analysis

The objective of this list is two-part: 1) use as many of the components from a single box of infantry as possible, and 2) make a list that works at a semi-competitive level. Please keep in mind, this list was written using only the content of a single box of infantry.

This 6 Order Die, 499pt army list can be built using all 30 of the models included in the US Rangers box. I must admit, this is one of the more well-rounded 1 Box, 1 Army forces I’ve made. The inclusion of both a Sniper and Bazooka on the Ranger sprue means you have the support weapon punch that is often lacking in a single box of infantry.

The core of this force is, unsurprisingly, two units of Rangers. I’ve includes the max number of SMGs (three) in each of these seven-man squads. The SMGs pair well with their Rangers lead the way! Special Rule. The “free” Run Order before the game begins will ensure these two units can close the distance quickly and engage enemy targets within 12″ range. Although they don’t have Rangers lead the way!, the Platoon Commander and his two buddies are also all armed with SMGs and should make the run across the table with the Ranger units.

Supporting this advance is a nine-man squad of Regular US Infantry. This unit can provide decent fire support with their two BARs and seven Rifles. Combined with Fire & Maneuver this squad is putting out 13 shots at 24″, not bad. For AT we have the trusty Bazooka Team. The Bazooka is already fantastic for taking out enemy armor with its Pen +5 and can now also fire into a building with a 2″ HE shot. Considering we don’t have any Artillery or Mortars this duel-purpose Bazooka is giving the list some much needed HE support.

I’m a big fan of how mobile this list is. The only unit that wants to stay in once place is the Sniper Team. And with Infiltrator you’ll have the option to get them deployed anywhere you’d like. The Sniper can concentrate on enemy Artillery and MG Teams. You want to do what you can to clear the way for the Rangers to make it across the table in one piece.

So there you have it! A solid list that uses every single Ranger in the box. This is a strong start to a US collection that can easily be expanded on.

What’s Next?

Consider these additions to your 500pt 1 Box Army:

  • Add the US Army Support Group – This list is calling out for a Heavy Weapons Platoon and the US Army Support Group Box is a step in the right direction. You can easily use the Med. Mortar, MMG Team, and Officer to create a Heavy Weapons Platoon. I’d also add the radio operator model as a Forward Air Observer into your Rifle Platoon. I’d even toss in a HMG Team into the Heavy Weapons Platoon as well. HMGs are having a moment in Third Edition and you don’t want to leave one out.
  • More Infantry – If you are going to up this list to 1250pts you’ll need at least one more infantry unit. These three squads are simply not enough for a full 1250pt game. I would add one additional man to each of the Ranger Squads and then add a third Ranger Squad as well.
  • Add HE – A Light Howitzer (or two) is needed. Either as an Artillery unit as an SPG. I do like the idea of this mobile force so maybe leave the Artillery at home and go for the SPG option. Something like the M8 Scott or M7 Priest would do very well with this force.
  • Vehicle Support – As mentioned above a couple of SPGs would go a long way. But once you reach that 1k or 1250pt mark you’ll need more AT as well. You can’t go wrong with a Sherman but something a bit more niche would fit our Ranger theme better like the M3 75mm (T12). That little Armor 7 half-track packs a Med. AT Gun for only 120pts.
