1 Box, 1 Army – Third Edition – Warlord Games German Grenadiers

Box Contents

The Warlord Games German Grenadiers is a plastic kit containing:

  • 30 German Grenadiers
  • 25 Rifles (15 Kar98k and 10 G43)
  • 15 SMGs (10 MP 40 and 5 PPSh-41)
  • 15 Assault Rifles (StG 44)
  • 10 LMGs (MG 42)
  • 10 Panzerfausts
  • 5 Pistols (holstered)

Although the new German Army Special Rules have been previewed on the Warlord Community, this Army List is built using the Army Special Rules from the Third Edition Rulebook. This list should adapt well once Armies of Germany: Third Edition is released in January 2025. Keep in mind that the points used to create this list are from the Rulebook, not Armies of Germany and may change once that book comes out.

Notes and Analysis

The objective of this list is two-part: 1) use as many of the components from a single box of infantry as possible, and 2) make a list that works at a semi-competitive level. Please keep in mind, this list was written using only the content of a single box of infantry.

This army list can be made with a single box of Warlord German Grenadiers. The list is one Rifle Platoon comprising a Platoon Commander, a 10-man Grenadier Squad equipped with 2 SMGs (including the NCO) and 2 LMGs, a second 10-man Grenadier Squad equipped with 1 SMG and 2 LMGs, and a 7-man Grenadier Squad armed to the teeth with 7 Assault Rifles and 2 Panzerfausts.

The list is designed to take advantage of the German Army Special Rules. Hitler’s Buzzsaw allows each of the four LMGs to fire five shots, permitting considerable board control when given the Ambush order.  While the Platoon has fewer Order Dice than other 500pt lists, Blitzkrieg allows the Commander to use the “You men, snap to action!” ability to take three Order Dice and activate the entire Platoon on his action.  Some players may wish to break the 10-man Rifle Squads in half to gain two more Order Dice, but these small units will be more brittle and susceptible to Morale issues.

The structure and usage of the two Regular Rifle Squads is intended to reflect the doctrine of the German rifle squads of the time. The MG squads will Advance to favorable tactical positions where they can lay down covering fire so that the Assault Squad can move into position to bring its close-range, high-volume firepower to bear. The Assault Squad is composed of Veterans for better Morale and survivability, improving their chances of closing the distance to their targets.

What’s Next?

If this army has a vulnerability, it is a weakness against armored vehicles. With only a pair of Panzerfausts as protection, one or two bad rolls can leave the Platoon helpless against Tanks and Armored Cars.

  • Add a Transport – The Sd.Kfz 251/1 can transport the Assault Squad as well as the Platoon Commander and his bodyguards, allowing them to close the distance to their targets with greater speed and safety. Or you can add a little more Anti-tank firepower by upgrading to the Sd.Kfz 251/10, which can only transport the Assault Squad but adds Light Anti-tank Gun for fire support against enemy Armored Cars and Transports.
  • Add Heer Weapons Teams – The Panzerschreck Team and Sniper can be integrated into your Rifle Platoon, though unfortunately the Flamethrower has no place in this list.
  • Add an Anti-tank Gun – A Heavy Anti-tank Gun like the PaK-40 can be a considerable threat to all but the toughest enemy Tanks, and can operate from behind the safety of the gun-line.
  • Add the Heer Support Group – In addition to the MMG and Medium Mortar Teams, this box includes four Headquarters units. The Medic can accompany the Platoon Commander or the Assault Squad to keep them alive as they close the range. A Forward Artillery Observer can supplement the Mortar to keep the enemy’s heads down and dig out units in cover. And the two Officers can serve as Commanders of the Heavy Weapons and Artillery Platoons you will be adding with the previously mentioned units.

  1. From previews of Armies of Germany, it appears that commanders and their bodyguard will be required to pay for weapons upgrades now. I am not sure if any other points cost changes are being implemented; but if not, then you could keep the list under 500 points by switching their armament to rifles, or eliminating one of the extra men and keeping the assault rifles for the commander and remaining man.
